Radio is one of the mainstream entertainment channels. As much as the going is busy and many people do not have time, they listen to the radio while on the move. When commuting or in the gym or doing various activities, people use that chance to catch up on their favorite shows. Radio is fun and many people normally want to get involved but they don’t know how to. In the era of YouTube and podcasts, it is much easier to get started than it was a few years ago. Some of the things to keep in mind when you want to start a radio station include:
Find your “why”
Why do you want to start your station? Is there a void you are trying to fill? What is pushing you to fill the void? Once your why is strong, then it will be easier to come up with a strong mission and that will help everything to be streamlined well. Once your mission is well worked out, it gives you the drive, helps you to stay focused and come up with the right goals and objectives.
Identify your edge
With plenty of radio stations out there, it can be easy to get lost in the crowd. It is therefore important to find out a distinguishing factor that will separate you from the crowd. That will be influenced by your goals and objectives. Once your mission and plan are well crafted, then you can get creative to find out something that will make your station different. You also need to define your niche, your content and how exactly you want your station to be. That can be possible by checking out the different stations in your identified niche and find a void that you can fill.
Have the right tools
If you are venturing into radio, there is no doubt that there are tools that you will need to make it a success. It is good to research the tools that you will need. It is not enough to have a DSLR for instance, you will need a microphone for DSLR too. Many people start by recording with their camera’s in-built system and as much as it works, it is not enough. For good quality sound, you will need to invest in high-quality microphones. You will also need a working space/studio. Most of the time people start from their homes but you don’t necessarily have to start from your home like everyone else.
Find out the legal requirements
It is not enough to have the right goals and tools, there are also legal requirements to be met. You need a license and you need to apply for a frequency. There are also many other requirements depending on the kind of station you want. For example, an internet radio station may not be the same as a regular radio station. Once you have the goals set right and know exactly what you want, then a radio station will easily be achievable.
